Task 1
Read through the following scenario then answer the questions below.
You are the manager of a busy high street internet café. It is Saturday lunchtime and there are 4 other members of staff working and approximately 30 customers. A fire takes hold in the kitchen when the deep fat fryer is left unattended.
Building plan
- The building has two floors joined by a single internal stairway.
The ground floor: The first floor:
café area customer/staff toilet facilities
kitchen broom cupboard
store room office
staff room.
- Customers only have access to the café area and toilet facilities.
- On the ground floor there are fire exits at the front and rear of the building, whilst the first floor only has one leading to an external fire escape.
- Make a fire action notice for staff that would list the things you would expect them to do in the instance of a fire.
Think about the size, colour, design and location of this notice as this may determine how effective it is. - Explain what you think the likely consequences would be of the following:
2.1 The fire door between the kitchen and the stairwell being held open with a fire extinguisher.
2.2 Staff collecting their bags, coats and other personal belongings from the staff rest room.
2.3 The upstairs fire exit door locked.2.4 Several customers using the internet facilities ignoring the fire alarm.
2.5 No fire action plan or practiced fire drill. Please present your work in your portfolio
