Dialling the Emergency Services
This can be harder than you might think… chances are that you are needing help urgently and are feeling anxious. Sometimes when we are in a state of panic, our thought processes do not function very efficiently.
- Dial 999
- Speak slowly and clearly
- Request the emergency service that you require
- Give the whole address including town and postcode
- Explain if anyone is trapped and what room they are in
- Explain if there anyone injured or disabled
Hoax Calls
Hoax calls can be just as devastating in their effects and it is important to understand the potentially horrific consequences of calling out the emergency services under false pretenses. Hoax calls can cost lives… for the time a fire engine spends traveling in the wrong direction to a hoax call, is time lost reaching other involved in genuine emergency.
If a hoax call is made from a mobile phone, the phone can be disconnected and rendered useless.
Hoax calls are illegal and carry penalties of up to £5000 fine or 6 months in prison.
