Conclusion

We have thus completed our journey to finding a pathway to quality of response. You have been provided with a systematic approach to answering the range of different questions which you will encounter this year. We have looked carefully at the target of each question, and more importantly at how they will be assessed .If you follow the advice offered within this booklet then I am confident that you will be able to progress to the higher levels of response. Remember, the nature of the questions will not change from year to year, and neither therefore should the way in which they are assessed. You have been shown a systematic approach to answering the specific questions and I suggest that this is memorised and applied on every occasion for each specific question type. In general, in order to make the transition to A/S you should:

  • Learn your work and read widely
  • Understand the targets of each question
  • Make sure you know how to reach the higher levels of response
  • Underline the key words within each question type
  • Learn the “trial approach” to essay type questions
  • Learn the alternative interpretations of the topics you are studying
  • Make historical judgements that are supported with evidence
  • Learn the formula for reliability and how to apply it: V=DAC 2
  • Effectively compare and contrast historical evidence
  • Place historical sources within their historical context
