INFORMATION

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. The population of Cardiff is 337,612 (August 2012) it is Wales' largest City and region. Cardiff also has many, many visitors on an annual basis, 20 million in 2099, who come to enjoy what Cardiff has to offer.

Cardiff hosts many sporting and cultural events during the course of a year at its iconic venues, the Millennium Stadium and Millennium Centre. For example major rugby matches such as the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament at the Millennium Stadium and touring West End musical shows at the Millennium Centre. Many famous bands and singers play at the Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena. As well as this, Cardiff attracts many visitors because of its re developed Cardiff Bay area where people can eat at one of the many restaurants, stroll around the Bay and Barrage; enjoy the sports and activities available at the International Sports Village. Even when the weather is bad, visitors can still enjoy Cardiff Bay, as it has the indoor Dragon Centre with restaurants, cinema complex, casino and bowling alley all under one roof.

All of these attractions together with the vibrant shopping facilities in Cardiff have meant that access into Cardiff and in particular, Cardiff Bay and the City Centre, has posed challenges. With so many people travelling to and around Cardiff something had to be done to make travel sustainable in the Capital City. That means to maintain access into and around the City that does not affect the traveller or the City's infrastructure too heavily now and in the years to come. Also, Cardiff is a working city, so each day thousands of people travel into the city to work.

In Cardiff, traffic levels are forecast to grow by 7-10% over the next five years – a figure higher than average for any city in Great Britain. In 2009, the Welsh Assembly Government in conjunction with Cardiff City Council launched a response to the increasing problem and announced that Cardiff would become the first Sustainable Travel City in Wales
