Introduction
North Wales could be described as a number of different destinations within a destination.
North Wales is an established tourist destination with many people visiting from the North West of England, other areas of Wales as well as inbound tourists from many countries.
However, within what is known as North Wales there are a number of different areas, which are tourist destinations in their own right.
These are:
- The Isle of Anglesey – The island has its own culture and has a number of secluded beaches with impressive coastal scenery.
- Snowdonia – The mountains and coast of the Snowdonia area, including the Snowdonia National Park, has been a tourist destination for some time. The area includes Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales, and is well-known for the range of outdoor activities available.
- The coastal resorts – The resorts of Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Prestatyn are traditional seaside towns with a range of facilities. The towns attract many visitors from the industrial cities of Northern England, such as Manchester and Liverpool
- The North Wales Borderlands - The Wrexham and Flintshire area includes a number of small towns and countryside areas.
Many visitors to North Wales may visit two or more of these areas during a stay in the area. This shows how difficult it may be to explain exactly what a tourist destination is.
