TasteDurham is a local award given to food outlets including cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels award. Businesses can be given the award because they:
- offer an interesting and varied menu
- serve good quality food
- are comfortable and clean places to eat
- source their produce locally.
There are two levels of TasteDurham awards: Quality Assured and Highest Quality Assured. Local Produce Champion is an additional badge awarded to those businesses that are most strongly committed to using local suppliers and fresh local produce.
The Durham eating out guide 2012, supported by Durham County Council, was a leaflet available free of charge to members of the public, as a way of promoting sustainable tourism to Durham City and County. The 2012 edition listed 17 TasteDurham award winners in Durham City.

'Wise Growth' is about tourism growing wisely, so that there are more tourists and more jobs in a tourism industry that is sustainable. 'Wise Growth' is about making new tourism sustainable from the outset, rather than creating more tourism and then thinking how it can be made sustainable. It is about sustainability being "built-in", not "bolt-on".
Plans designed to help Durham City's tourism grow wisely include:
- a £3.5m project ('Open Treasures') which is designed to make visiting the Cathedral more interesting for more people
- a new World Heritage Site Visitor Centre
- a new exhibition spaces on Palace Green.
