Introduction to Dan-yr-Ogof
Activity 1
Study the images and then consider the potential Health, Safety & Security hazards and issues inside the caves.
Suggest the range of health and safety hazards and issues present within the Dan-yr-Ogof showcaves.
How many hazards and issues did you identify? Click the reveal button above.
Activity 2a
Having watched the video and considered the main hazards, think about what you would write as a Health and Safety notice for visitors to the Showcaves. When you have completed your statement reveal the actual notice displayed on the entrance to the caves.

The extraordinary natural beauty seen at Dan-Yr-Ogof has been created by nature over millions of years, but within this natural beauty are several natural hazards.
- Areas of the showcaves and outside pathways may become slippery during certain weather conditions.
Please be especially careful on the steps and outside gradients.
Sensible footwear is recommended. - Do not leave the main pathways, or cross safety fences.
- The cave roof in a few places is low, so please watch your head.
- The site is protected by an Act of Parliament (SSSI) and it is a serious offence to vandalise the cave formations. Please help us to protect the caves for future generations.
- In the very unlikely event of a lighting failure, remain calm and await one of our security team or other tourists carrying special torches. Do not try to get out of the caves in the dark.
We sincerely hope you have a safe and enjoyable visit.
Activity 2b
Signage is important at Dan-yr-Ogof. (This will be explored in a later section.) The notice at the entrance to the caves is one of many found around the site and inside the caves. Do you feel that any additional information should be added to this notice? If so, what information should be added?
Activity 3
As can be seen from the image below, Dan-yr-Ogof in fact offers 10 attractions on the same site.

Use the website of the organisation - http://www.showcaves.co.uk/index.html - to develop a summary of the products and services provided at Dan-yr-Ogof.
