TRADE ASSOCIATIONS – negotiate rates of pay and conditions of employment with trade unions in some industries, present the industry’s views to the European Union, the government and the public and provide advice, information and research facilities for member firms
PRESSURE GROUPS – try to change the policies of businesses. Examples include Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth who oppose when they see businesses causing pollution by their activities and the RSPCA and other animal rights groups who oppose what they see as the cruel use of animals for profit, for example in testing cosmetics.
CHARITIES many charities such as the childrens’ charity Barnados are also private sector businesses. Their main aim is not to maximise profits however but to provide high quality care for people.
THE MEDIA – is used for advertising. Publicity in the media also can act either in favour of a business or against it depending on whether it is favourable or not
THE WELSH DEVELOPMENT AGENCY – this is a body that is responsible for attracting businesses to set up in Wales. It is one example of a Regional Development Agency
LOCAL COUNCILS –
most local councils have a department that tries to attract new businesses to
the area. For example Newport County Council
worked with the W.D.A to persuade the electronics manufacturer LG to locate
in South Wales. It granted LG planning permission to build the factory.
THE GOVERNMENT – helps a lot of different types of help to businesses. Parts of the country with high unemployment are designated as Development Areas and firms are given government grants to set up in them. This is also called Regional Selective Assistance (RSA)
English Partnerships is a government agency which helps industry regenerate run down city areas.
Businesses in rural areas can get financial help from the Rural Development
Commission for England
Training and Enterprise Councils(TEC) and Business Links give help and advice
to local businesses
THE EUROPEAN UNION –
provides assistance for regions of high unemployment in terms of advice and
information, financial help and practical help. The Common Agricultural Policy
helps support farmers’ incomes.
