These require you to write down one or more pieces of information, such as brief facts or examples. You do not have to write in detail for these command words.
Some examples of questions you may be asked include:
State one possible advantage of using engineered timber to create a structural form.
Name two stages in the construction phase of the life cycle of a building.
Identify two types of structural frames.
This requires you to give the concise, clear meaning of a term. It is often a good idea to give a definition at the beginning of a more extended question to provide yourself with a focus for your response.
An example of the type of question would be:
Define the term substructure.
This requires you to give an account of something, or link a series of facts, information, or events in a logical order. ‘Describe’ does not require you to give an explanation but to simply present the facts clearly.
An example of the type of question would be:
Describe the role of a quantity surveyor.
This requires you to give a brief outline of the main characteristics of the topic you are being asked to consider.
An example of the type of question would be:
Outline the issues that a property developer would need to consider when refurbishing an existing building.
This requires you to produce a diagram, with or without a ruler. You should produce a drawing showing the key features, taking care over proportions. The key features should be labelled (annotated).
An example of this type of question would be:
Sketch a typical portal frame and label it to show three features.
This requires you to work out a value from given facts, figures, or information. It is important to include the correct units in your answer.
An example of this type of question would be:
Calculate the minimum number of bricks required to build a wall 5.48m long x 2.39m high.
This requires you to identify and explain the similarities between two or more concepts or approaches. Your answer should include a definition or description of the characteristics of the concepts or approaches you are being asked to compare.
An example of this type of question would be:
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the use of design and build contracts with the use of traditional contracts.
This requires you to identify and explain the differences between two or more concepts or approaches. You should use examples from your own knowledge to support the points you make.
An example of this type of question would be:
Contrast the roles carried out by a quantity surveyor when working for a client and when working for a contractor.
This requires you to apply knowledge and understanding to situations where there are a range of valid options. You will need to discuss these options and make recommendations about the option to be adopted.
An example of this type of question would be:
Suggest the most appropriate type of structural frame to be used to construct a single storey industrial building.
This requires you to provide details and reasons for why something is as it is or why it happens. The answer should not be a list of reasons but instead fully developed arguments.
An example of this type of question would be:
Explain why cavity wall construction is particularly suitable for residential housing.
This requires you to write about an issue or topic in depth, explaining relevant points and building up a balanced argument with supporting details and examples.
An example of this type of question would be:
Discuss the sustainable urban drainage systems available to a developer.
This requires you to use your knowledge and understanding of a topic or concept to consider evidence for and against the situation you have been asked to evaluate. You should offer a verdict presenting evidence and examples that both support and contradict your arguments. You should come to a final decision on the most important factors that lead to your conclusion.
An example of this type of question would be:
Evaluate the key benefits and drawbacks of types of ground floor construction.
This requires you to present a reasoned case supported by evidence from your knowledge and understanding of the topic. You should not simply provide facts but should include a range of evidence or theories to support your response.
An example of this type of question would be:
Justify the use of prefabrication techniques for primary structures.
