The National Probation Service (NPS), is the government section of the probation service. The privatised section is overseen by Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRC), who operate as a business. The National Probation Service generally oversees high risk offenders and the CRCs oversee mid to low-risk offenders. The aim behind both the public and private sections is to support rehabilitation whilst protecting the public. They will monitor the offender in the community, meeting on a regular basis and supporting them to live a law-abiding life. The NPS also manages approved premises for offenders with a residence requirement on their sentence. A further aspect of the NPS’s role is to prepare pre-sentence reports for courts, to help them issue the most appropriate sentence .
