Six-step essay planner

1. ‘Question the question’
Annotate the wording of the discussion statement. What are the challenging phrases, the specific focus, the underlying assumptions and the invitation to debate and think critically? What spatial and temporal scales could be adopted as part of the answer? Try to ‘question the question’!
2. Paragraph content planner
Assume three, four or five key paragraphs of content can be written, preceded by a brief introduction and possibly finishing with an evaluative conclusion. Which key points would you want to include in each of those paragraphs; what are the main concepts and processes that are relevant to the question? How many paragraphs will argue one perspective, and how many will argue alternative perspectives?
3. Case study choices
Which case studies are you going to use to support your arguments? What contrasting scales and contexts can be used?
4. Quick AO2 checklist
Are you evaluating throughout? It’s important not to leave it all to your final conclusion, but to complete each paragraph with an analytical and/or evaluative statement. Can you find plenty of connections to write about? Can you include any complex connections, such as multiple ‘knock-on’ impacts or causes? Can you show conceptual understanding (of scale, risk, feedback interdependence, etc.)?
5. Conclusion
Is your conclusion going to be consistent with the preceding paragraphs? Will it do more than repeat them in summary? Does it present an additional piece of insight, raise a question, show a gathering of various perspectives by coming to a personal judgement or view? Does it address the question directly and come down on one side of the argument?
6. Start writing
As you start your answer, make your introduction short and purposeful; define the way you have interpreted the question and the direction you will be taking in your answer. Three or four sentences can be sufficient.

Cynllun traethawd 6 cham

1. ‘Cwestiynu'r cwestiwn’
Anodwch eiriad y gosodiad trafodaeth. Beth yw'r ymadroddion heriol, y canolbwynt penodol, y tybiaethau sylfaenol a'r gwahoddiad i drafod a meddwl yn feirniadol? Pa raddfeydd gofodol ac amseryddol/tymhorol y gellid eu defnyddio fel rhan o'r ateb? Ceisiwch 'gwestiynu'r cwestiwn'!
2. Cynllunio cynnwys pob paragraff
Tybiwch y gellir ysgrifennu 3, 4 neu 5 paragraff o gynnwys allweddol, gyda chyflwyniad byr yn dod cyn y rhain a chasgliad gwerthusol i orffen o bosibl. Pa bwyntiau allweddol fyddech chi eisiau eu cynnwys ym mhob un o'r paragraffau hynny; beth yw'r prif gysyniadau a phrosesau sy'n berthnasol i'r cwestiwn? Sawl paragraff fydd yn dadlau un safbwynt, a sawl un fydd yn dadlau safbwyntiau eraill?
3. Dewisiadau astudiaeth achos
Pa astudiaethau achos ydych chi'n mynd i'w defnyddio i gefnogi eich dadleuon? Pa raddfeydd a chyd-destunau cyferbyniol y gellir eu defnyddio?
4. Rhestr wirio AA2 cyflym
Ydych chi'n gwerthuso trwy'r traethawd? Mae'n bwysig peidio â gadael popeth i'ch casgliad terfynol, ond cwblhau pob paragraff â gosodiad dadansoddol a/neu gwerthusol. Ydych chi'n gallu meddwl am ddigon o gysylltiadau i ysgrifennu amdanyn nhw? Ydych chi'n gallu cynnwys cysylltiadau cymhleth, fel nifer o effeithiau cynyddol neu achosion? Ydych chi'n gallu dangos dealltwriaeth gysyniadol (o raddfa, risg, adborth, cyd-ddibyniaeth ac ati)?
5. Casgliad
Ydy'ch casgliad yn mynd i fod yn gyson â'r paragraffau blaenorol? Ydy e'n mynd i wneud mwy na'u hailadrodd wrth grynhoi? Ydy e'n cyflwyno darn ychwanegol o fewnwelediad, codi cwestiwn, neu ddangos casgliad o wahanol safbwyntiau drwy ddod i farn neu safbwynt personol? Ydy e'n mynd i'r afael â'r cwestiwn yn uniongyrchol ac yn ochri ag un ochr y ddadl?
6. Dechrau ysgrifennu
Wrth i chi gychwyn eich ateb, gwnewch eich cyflwyniad yn fyr ac yn bwrpasol; diffiniwch y ffordd rydych chi wedi dehongli'r cwestiwn a'r cyfeiriad y byddwch chi'n ei gymryd yn eich ateb. Gall 3 neu 4 brawddeg fod yn ddigon.

Examiner’s tip:

The advice from one senior examiner is that essay planning is critical and students are advised to ‘spend time considering a short plan’. How you do this is up to you: a mind map, a list of bullet points, a graphic model… etc. You will be expected to construct an answer and not walk into the exam room with a ready-made response. Allocate 2-3 minutes for constructing your plan on paper.

Awgrym gan yr arholwr:

Cyngor un uwch arholwr yw bod cynllunio traethawd yn hanfodol a chynghorir myfyrwyr i 'dreulio amser yn ystyried cynllun byr'. Chi sy'n penderfynu sut rydych chi am wneud hyn: map meddwl, rhestr o bwyntiau bwled, model graffig...ac ati. Bydd disgwyl i chi lunio ateb, nid cerdded i mewn i'r ystafell arholiad gydag ymateb parod. Dyrannwch 2-3 munud ar gyfer llunio eich cynllun ar bapur.

  1. Write a plan first. It’s highly likely that you have far more information you could put into your response than you have time for. In your plan, decide on the most relevant and insightful AO1 and AO2 points to include in your answer.

  2. In order to access AO2 marks, try to make sure each of your paragraphs includes at least some ongoing evaluation. (Don’t leave it all until the conclusion.)

  3. To maximise AO2 marks, try to evaluate some points TWICE – show how information can be used to build an argument; then try to offer an ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE about the same point.

  4. Watch out for getting stuck in lengthy case study stories. Be selective in the case study facts you use, and tailor what you say to the question that’s been asked.

  5. Have the CASE mnemonic in mind as you write each paragraph: connections, concepts and evaluation.

  6. Your conclusion is important. Make sure the paragraphs that lead to it are consistent with your final AO2 judgement. (Try not to sit on the fence.)

  7. Be concise throughout. Avoid long, rambling sentences.

  8. Don’t repeat yourself. Each sentence should be expressing something new.

  9. Make sure you have answered the question as it is worded, including key links. Keep glancing back at the title before you begin each new paragraph.

  10. There’s no reason to leave the essay questions until last. Consider writing them earlier to ensure you can give them sufficient time.

  1. Ysgrifennwch gynllun yn gyntaf. Mae'n hynod debygol bod gennych chi lawer mwy o wybodaeth y gallech chi ei rhoi yn eich ymateb nag y mae gennych chi amser ar ei gyfer. Yn eich cynllun, penderfynwch ar y pwyntiau AA1 ac AA2 mwyaf perthnasol a chraff i'w cynnwys yn eich ateb.

  2. Er mwyn cyrraedd marciau AA2, ceisiwch wneud yn siŵr bod pob un o'ch paragraffau yn cynnwys rhywfaint o werthuso parhaus. (Peidiwch â gadael popeth tan y casgliad.)

  3. Er mwyn ennill y mwyaf o farciau AA2 â phosibl, ceisiwch werthuso rhai pwyntiau DDWYWAITH – dangoswch sut gellir defnyddio gwybodaeth i lunio dadl; yna ceisiwch gynnig SAFBWYNT ARALL ar yr un pwynt.

  4. Byddwch yn ofalus rhag mynd ar goll mewn straeon astudiaethau achos hirfaith. Dylech ddewis a dethol y ffeithiau astudiaeth achos rydych chi'n eu defnyddio, gan deilwra'r hyn rydych chi'n ei ddweud i'r cwestiwn sydd wedi'i ofyn.

  5. Cofiwch am y cofair CASE wrth i chi ysgrifennu pob paragraff: cysylltiadau, cysyniadau a gwerthuso.

  6. Mae eich casgliad yn bwysig. Gwnewch yn siŵr bod y paragraffau sy'n arwain ato yn gyson â'ch barn AA2 derfynol. (Ceisiwch beidio ag eistedd ar y ffens.)

  7. Byddwch yn gryno drwy'r traethawd. Dylech osgoi brawddegau hirwyntog.

  8. Peidiwch ag ailadrodd eich hunain. Dylai pob brawddeg fynegi rhywbeth newydd.

  9. Gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod wedi ateb y cwestiwn fel y mae wedi'i eirio, gan gynnwys cysylltau allweddol. Edrychwch eto ar y teitl cyn i chi ddechrau pob paragraff newydd.

  10. Does dim rheswm dros adael y cwestiynau traethawd tan y diwedd. Ystyriwch eu hysgrifennu nhw'n gynt er mwyn sicrhau eich bod yn gallu rhoi digon o amser iddyn nhw.

Identify where AO2 credit should be awarded in the answer to this question:

Examine the role of foreign MNCs as a cause of changing characteristics for urban areas.

Add your own marking notes using the CASE codes:

C – makes connections between ideas (including cause and effect relationships, and synoptic links)

AS – applies specialised concepts such as scale

E – offers an evaluation (weighs up evidence, thinks critically, draws conclusions)

Nodwch lle dylid rhoi marciau AA2 yn yr ateb i'r cwestiwn hwn:

Archwiliwch rôl cwmnïau amlwladol (MNCs) tramor fel achos newidiadau mewn nodweddion ar gyfer ardaloedd trefol.

Ychwanegwch eich nodiadau marcio eich hunain gan ddefnyddio'r codau CASE:

C – gwneud cysylltiadau rhwng syniadau (yn cynnwys perthnasoedd achos ac effaith, a chysylltau synoptig)

AS – cymhwyso cysyniadau arbenigol megis graddfa

E – cynnig gwerthusiad (pwyso a mesur tystiolaeth, meddwl yn feirniadol, dod i gasgliadau)

You’re the marker

Examine the role of foreign MNCs as a cause of changing characteristics for urban areas.

The characteristics of urban areas include employment structure, local culture and physical environment. Foreign multinational corporations include food companies like McDonald's and also employers such as foreign-owned car companies and India's Tata which owns Port Talbot Steelworks.

In the last decades, many Central Business Districts (CBDs) in UK towns and cities have been transformed by MNCs such as McDonald's and KFC, and chains of clothing stores. One result is that many places are now ‘clone towns’ – they have lost their local sense of identity because of globalisation.

It is not just MNCs that are responsible for this, however. Local councils and developers build the shopping centres where MNC shops locate. MNC investment and regeneration efforts by local councils are closely interconnected, and together they are responsible for changing places.

It is also important to note that these changes may only affect a small area of towns and cities, the CBD. Much larger areas of suburbs may not be affected as much.

Looking now at manufacturing industries, Nissan and other MNCs have invested all across the UK, helping to sustain secondary employment in places like Sunderland and Port Talbot. Sometimes, this has brought major place changes when new factories are built. But sometimes the change is less noticeable if the foreign company has simply taken over an industry that was there already. This is what happened in Port Talbot when Tata took over an existing steelworks.

Unfortunately, foreign ownership introduces new risks to an area. If the MNC decides to close the factory, it can have devastating changes for local places, leading to high unemployment, deserted factories and warehouses, and social problems that develop as part of the cycle of deprivation, in a feedback loop. Jaguar Land Rover in Coventry is also owned by Tata, and more than 1000 jobs have been lost there recently due to cutbacks. The decision for the UK to leave the EU may affect whether some MNCs stay here in the long-run or quit, which might lead to some places becoming de-industrialised again. This again shows how MNC decisions are in turn influenced by politics.

Chi yw'r marciwr

Archwiliwch rôl cwmnïau amlwladol (MNCs) tramor fel achos newidiadau mewn nodweddion ar gyfer ardaloedd trefol.

Mae nodweddion ardaloedd trefol yn cynnwys strwythur cyflogaeth, diwylliant lleol ac amgylchedd ffisegol. Mae cwmnïau amlwladol tramor yn cynnwys cwmnïau bwyd fel McDonald's, a hefyd cyflogwyr fel cwmnïau ceir tramor a chwmni Tata o India sy'n berchen ar Waith Dur Port Talbot.

Yn y degawdau diwethaf, mae llawer o ardaloedd busnes canolog (CBDs) yn nhrefi a dinasoedd y DU wedi'u trawsnewid gan gwmnïau amlwladol fel McDonald's a KFC, a siopau dillad cadwyn. Un canlyniad yw bod llawer o leoedd erbyn hyn yn 'drefi wedi'u clonio' – maen nhw wedi colli eu hymdeimlad o hunaniaeth leol oherwydd globaleiddio.

Nid dim ond cwmnïau amlwladol sy'n gyfrifol am hyn, fodd bynnag. Mae cynghorau lleol a datblygwyr yn adeiladu'r canolfannau siopa lle mae siopau cwmnïau amlwadol yn cael eu lleoli. Mae buddsoddiad cwmnïau amlwadol ac ymdrechion adfywio gan gynghorau lleol wedi'u cysylltu'n agos, a gyda'i gilydd nhw sy'n gyfrifol am newid lleoedd.

Mae hefyd yn bwysig nodi y gall y newidiadau hyn effeithio ar ardal fychan yn unig mewn trefi a dinasoedd, sef canol busnes trefi. Efallai na fydd ardaloedd llawer mwy o'r maestrefi yn cael eu heffeithio cymaint.

O edrych ar ddiwydiannau gweithgynhyrchu, mae Nissan a chwmnïau amlwladol eraill wedi buddsoddi ar draws y DU, gan helpu i gynnal cyflogaeth eilaidd mewn lleoedd fel Sunderland a Phort Talbot. Weithiau, mae hyn wedi achosi newidiadau mawr mewn lleoedd pan fydd ffatrïoedd newydd yn cael eu hadeiladu. Ond weithiau mae'r newid yn llai amlwg os mai dim ond wedi cymryd diwydiant a oedd yno'n barod drosodd y mae'r cwmni tramor. Dyma a ddigwyddodd ym Mhort Talbot pan wnaeth Tata gymryd gwaith dur a oedd yn bodoli'n barod drosodd.

Yn anffodus, mae perchenogaeth tramor yn cyflwyno risgiau newydd i ardal. Os yw'r cwmni amlwladol yn penderfynu cau'r ffatri, gall achosi newidiadau dinistriol i'r lleoedd lleol, gan arwain at lefelau diweithdra uchel, ffatrïoedd a warysau wedi'u gadael yn wag, a phroblemau cymdeithasol sy'n datblygu fel rhan o gylchred amddifadedd, mewn dolen adborth. Tata sy'n berchen ar Jaguar Land Rover yn Coventry hefyd, ac mae mwy na 1000 o swyddi wedi'u colli yno yn ddiweddar o ganlyniad i doriadau. Gall penderfyniad y DU i adael yr Undeb Ewropeaidd effeithio ar p'un a fydd rhai cwmnïau amlwladol yn aros yma yn y tymor hir neu'n rhoi'r gorau iddi, a allai arwain at rai lleoedd yn cael eu dad-ddiwydianeiddio eto. Mae hyn yn dangos eto sut mae penderfyniadau cwmnïau amlwladol yn cael eu dylanwadu gan wleidyddiaeth.

Examiner’s comments:

This 350-word answer meets all the AO2 ‘CASE’ criteria well.

Connections – the answer does more than simply describe how MNCs cause place changes. There is some thoughtful examination of the role MNCs play as part of a bigger interconnected picture, which also includes decisions by local councils or the referendum vote to leave the EU.

Application of concepts – there is applied understanding of scale. (The answer recognises that large areas of suburbs in towns and cities are not necessarily changed by MNCs, just CBDs.) The important concepts of feedback and risk are also mentioned.

Evaluation – overall, this is a highly evaluative account, with each paragraph including some ongoing evaluation. This involves an appraisal of the role of MNCs, along with critical thinking about the extent to which any changes in an area are actually significant. (The comment about Tata buying existing steelworks in Port Talbot, so changes are actually minor, is a very good evaluative point, for example.)

Sylwadau'r arholwr:

Mae'r ateb 350 gair hwn yn bodloni'r meini prawf 'CASE' AA2 yn dda.

Cysylltiadau – mae'r ateb yn gwneud mwy na dim ond disgrifio sut mae cwmnïau amlwladol yn achosi newidiadau mewn lleoedd. Mae rhywfaint o archwilio ystyriol i'r rhan y mae cwmnïau amlwladol yn ei chwarae fel rhan o ddarlun cysylltiedig mwy, sydd hefyd yn cynnwys penderfyniadau a wneir gan gynghorau lleol neu'r bleidlais refferendwm i adael yr UE.

Cymhwyso cysyniadau – mae'n cymhwyso dealltwriaeth o raddfa. (Mae'r ateb yn cydnabod nad yw ardaloedd mawr o faestrefi mewn trefi a dinasoedd o reidrwydd yn cael eu newid gan gwmnïau amlwladol, dim ond ardaloedd busnes canolog.) Cyfeirir at gysyniadau pwysig adborth a risg hefyd.

Gwerthuso – ar y cyfan, mae hwn yn adroddiad gwerthusol iawn, gyda phob paragraff yn cynnwys rhywfaint o werthuso parhaus. Mae hyn yn cynnwys arfarniad o rôl cwmnïau amlwladol, ynghyd â meddwl beirniadol am y graddau y mae unrhyw newidiadau mewn ardal yn sylweddol mewn gwirionedd. (Mae'r sylw am Tata yn prynu gwaith dur a oedd yn bodoli'n barod ym Mhort Talbot, felly mae'r newidiadau yn fach mewn gwirionedd, yn bwynt gwerthusol da iawn, er enghraifft.)
