Schools promote health by providing health education through both the formal curriculum during lesson times and through the informal curriculum, such as through assemblies. Through the formal curriculum, classroom-based topics might include: healthy eating, mental health and well-being and sexual health. Through the informal curriculum, topics such as road safety may be addressed, for example through having an assembly on road safety.
Teachers and lecturers can encourage positive attitudes and healthy living and give advice on general well-being. They can carry out classroom activities to promote health, such as projects on diet and physical education.

Do some research into some local third sector organisations. Choose one organisation and make a poster explaining how it promotes health and well-being.
Here are some examples of learners work who have completed this.
They are a charity that has been working with mental health for 30 years. Their mission is to be a platform for connection, transformation and social change. They want sustainable wellbeing for all suffering with mental health. Their work takes a trauma informed approach to understanding mental health and emotional distress. They are working towards a fundamental shift in the way that public services are provided and are making sure that people with mental health problems get the correct help that they need.
How they help:
Welsh hearts are the leading heart charity in Wales for placing defibrillators training in Wales. They are regarded as the heart charity at the centre of saving many lives in Wales. Their aim is to provide public access defibrillators in Wales in close partnership with strategic partners. This is in place to provide free defibrillator and CPR training for the Welsh public. Also, to screen Welsh hearts for heart conditions that may otherwise go undetected. Another reason would be to ensure moneys raised in Wales are utilized and distributed within Wales on specific heart related projects.
The Welsh hearts aim to support the future ambition that every facility in Wales, no matter the size, will be no more than 100m from access to a life-saving defibrillator.
The Welsh hearts aim to work hard across Wales to raise funds for their life saving research, support people living with a heart disease also to reduce the risk of future generations.

Latch Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity supports children receiving treatment for cancer and leukaemia at the Children’s Hospital for Wales and their families.
The organization offers families:
And many more!
They need to raise £700,000 a year to cover the costs of supporting families.
Although they are based within the Children’s Hospital for Wales, they have a Social Worker team that visits families at home across Wales.
Whilst the children are in hospital, they often miss their normal lives, where they are interacting with others. LATCH provides these children with a range of activities and treats to keep children’s morale high and keeping them occupied and amused during long stays in hospitals.
In 2017, they launched an ‘iPad’s for patients’ project. This is where they give an iPads to individual patients. This is done to keep the patient occupied and entertained, but also, they are able to keep contact with friends and families through social media and they can also carry on with their school curricular.
Decide whether these local charities support physical health or mental health. Drag the national charities to the correct columns.
