Literacy skills

When working in early years and childcare settings, a range of basic skills will need to be developed which will enable childcare workers to work confidently and successfully with children and young people. The aim is to support children. Developing basic skills such as reading, writing, communication, numeracy and digital skills will enable childcare workers to achieve this. These skills are needed to learn, work and live. Strong basic skills will enable childcare workers to:

  • help children and young people in all areas of learning
  • identify children's needs
  • observe children and record findings
  • keep general records
  • write reports
  • attend staff meetings
  • communicate with parents/carers
  • communicate with colleagues and other professionals
  • report back on any courses attended
  • prepare educational and extra-curricular activities
  • research specific areas of education and care
  • work as a team
  • solve problems
  • organise time.

Essential Skills Wales is suitable for childcare workers across a range of abilities and ages supporting effective performance and learning. It encourages individuals to:

  • think
  • plan
  • reflect on how to complete the course
  • review plans in response to difficulties
  • make new plans to get things done.

Childcare workers must work through levels to gain specific qualifications. There are four levels to each qualification.

Level 1: Help learners to develop basic techniques which will demonstrate their competence and ability to apply the skills from day to day.

Level 2: Build on level 1 but learners are required to extend the techniques. They demonstrate that they can make decisions when completing simple tasks.

Level 3: By now, learners will be able to cope with more complex tasks and activities. They will demonstrate the ability to reason and explain how and why they make specific decisions. They make choices and decisions independently.

Level 4: The ability to work independently will enable learners to take responsibility for their learning, managing activities and identifying relevant skills. They must demonstrate the ability to monitor progress and reflect on practice, e.g. adapt their plans as required.

Y nod ydy cefnogi’r plant. Mae datblygu sgiliau sylfaenol megis darllen, ysgrifennu, cyfathrebu, rhifedd a sgiliau digidol yn mynd i alluogi gweithwyr gofal plant i gyflawni hyn. Mae angen y sgiliau yma i ddysgu, gweithio a byw. Bydd sgiliau sylfaenol cadarn yn galluogi gweithwyr gofal plant i:

  • gynorthwyo plant a phobl ifanc ym mhob maes dysgu
  • adnabod anghenion plant
  • arsylwi ar blant a chofnodi darganfyddiadau
  • cadw cofnodion cyffredinol
  • ysgrifennu adroddiadau
  • mynychu cyfarfodydd staff
  • cyfathrebu â rhieni/gofalwyr
  • cyfathrebu gyda chydweithwyr a phobl broffesiynol eraill
  • adrodd yn ôl am gyrsiau a fynychwyd
  • paratoi gweithgareddau addysgol ac allgyrsiol
  • gwneud ymchwil i feysydd penodol ar addysg a gofal
  • gweithio mewn tîm
  • datrys problemau
  • trefnu amser.

Mae Sgiliau Hanfodol Cymru yn addas ar gyfer gweithwyr gofal plant ar draws amryw o alluoedd ac oedran gan gefnogi effeithiolrwydd perfformiad a dysgu. Mae’n annog yr unigolyn i :

  • feddwl
  • cynllunio
  • myfyrio ar sut i gwblhau’r cwrs
  • adolygu cynlluniau wrth ymateb i anawsterau
  • cynllunio o’r newydd er mwyn bwrw ymlaen a’r gwaith.

Bydd rhaid i gweithwyr gofal plant weithio trwy lefelau i ennill cymwysterau penodol. Mae pedair lefel i bob cymhwyster.

Lefel 1: Cynorthwyo dysgwyr i ddatblygu technegau sylfaenol a fydd yn dangos eu cymhwysedd a’u gallu i roi’r sgiliau ar waith o ddydd i ddydd.

Lefel 2: Adeiladu ar lefel 1 ond mae’n ofynnol i’r dysgwr i ymestyn y technegau. Mae’n dangos ei fod yn medru gwneud penderfyniadau wrth gyflawni tasgau syml.

Lefel 3: Erbyn hyn bydd y dysgwr yn medru ymdopi â thasgau a gweithgareddau mwy cymhleth. Bydd yn dangos y gallu i resymu ac esbonio sut a pham mae’n gwneud penderfyniadau penodol. Mae’n gwneud dewisiadau a phenderfyniadau yn annibynnol.

Lefel 4: Bydd medru gweithio’n annibynnol yn galluogi’r dysgwr gymryd cyfrifoldeb dros ei ddysgu gan reoli gweithgareddau ac adnabod sgiliau perthnasol. Rhaid arddangos y gallu i fonitro cynnydd a myfyrio ynghylch arfer, e.e. addasu eu cynlluniau fel bo angen.

Dyma rai o’r sgiliau sydd angen eu datblygu i gymhwyso gyda lefel 1. Gellir datblygu sgiliau sylfaenol fel a ganlyn:

SGILIAU SYLFAENOL
Llythrennedd Rhifedd Cymhwysedd Digidol
Darllen yn annibynnol, deall a dod o hyd i wybodaeth berthnasol Deall data rhifedd, megis darllen, deall a thynnu gwybodaeth o siartiau, graffiau a tablau Medru cael mynediad i ddyfais ddigidol gan wybod sut i gadw’n ddiogel ar-lein
Darllen a deall geiriau allweddol a brawddegau Darllen a deall rhifau wedi’u harddangos mewn ffyrdd gwahanol megis canrannau, ffracsiynau a degolion Agor ffeiliau, gwneud newidiadau a chyflwyno gwaith mewn fformat digidol. Defnyddio arfau digidol wrth gydweithio
Darganfod gwybodaeth mewn testunau a delweddau Darllen , mesur a chofnodi amser drwy ddefnyddio’r fformat cywir Medru agor ac ymateb i negeseuon digidol. Defnyddio iaith ac ymddygiad addas
Defnyddio gwybodaeth a ddarganfyddir a pharatoi ar gyfer gymryd rhan mewn trafodaeth Adio, tynnu, lluosi a rhannu swm o arian Creu a chadw ffeiliau. Medru diwygio ffeiliau, e.e. ychwanegu testun a delweddau
Bydd angen arddangos sgiliau megis gwybodaeth, teimladau, barn a chwestiynu wrth gynnal trafodaeth Lluosi a rhannu rhifau degol syml Medru gweithio’n ddiogel mewn amgylchedd ddigidol amrywiol - gwrth firws, sbam, iaith ar lein, datganiad preifatrwydd
Ysgrifennu darn o tua 250 o eiriau ar destun penodol ac ar gyfer gynulleidfa a ddewisir Defnyddio canrannau a ffracsiynau syml Trefnu ffolderi ar gyfer cadw gwybodaeth ac adnabod ffyrdd i’w gadw’n ddiogel. Defnyddio geiriau a brawddegau addas i chwilio am y ffeiliau
Defnyddio iaith ysgrifenedig sy’n addas ar gyfer y gynulleidfa Mesur perimedr, arwynebedd a chyfaint Defnyddio rhwydweithiau cymdeithasol proffesiynol i wella arfer personol a phroffesiynol
