Childcare workers should receive regular feedback from their managers during the induction process. Effective childcare workers use this feedback to develop their learning and improve the quality of their work with children, young people and their families/carers. The ability to reflect on practice needs to be developed. This involves learning from experience and modifying practice through critical analysis. In order to reflect on practice, childcare workers must have a clear knowledge and understanding of their role and responsibilities. Childcare workers can review their professional practice through realistic and regular assessment of the extent to which their practice corresponds to their role and responsibilities.

They must have knowledge and understanding of reflective analysis techniques such as:

  • questioning - what? why? how?
  • looking for other ways to achieve the aim
  • keeping an open mind and considering different perspectives
  • thinking about the consequences of their actions
  • testing ideas by comparing and contrasting, e.g. asking 'what if?'
  • thinking of ideas, looking for, identifying and solving problems.

Feedback is important for learning and development as it helps to develop an awareness of strengths as well as areas for improvement. Constructive feedback helps to develop confidence and plan professional development and enables childcare workers to extend their learning by reflecting on a prior situation or experience. It also enables childcare workers to review their effectiveness in completing tasks and activities.

Reflective practice in supervision and appraisal

Effective supervision and appraisal can be achieved by showing empathy towards the supervisor. It is important to be honest at all times, listen carefully and treat others with respect. There should be no judgement; instead support should be offered reflecting on future direction. This will ensure that the individual being supervised and appraised can develop their practice in the best possible way.

Those who are being supervised have rights and it must be ensured that they:

  • receive effective and sensitive supervision
  • are treated fairly
  • have their feelings and views recognised
  • are treated as adults
  • have the opportunity to disagree
  • learn from their mistakes
  • ask for advice on things which are unclear or unknown to them
  • have someone to listen to them
  • are informed of any changes.

This will give value and purpose to the supervision and appraisal. It will demonstrate the reflective practice between both individuals building on feelings, values and using the thinking skills of the individual being supervised.

The importance of effective supervision, reflective practice and relevant learning opportunities for the well-being of children, their families/carers

  • Effective supervision is needed to provide opportunities for childcare workers to reflect on their practice as well as develop knowledge and skills.
  • The aim is to develop and support staff so that they can strive to work successfully as part of the setting's team ensuring a positive impact on children and their families/carers.
  • The purpose of supervision is to give individuals the opportunity for critical reflection in order to draw attention to any matters arising, putting the interests of children and their families/carers first. It provides an opportunity to think of ways of solving problems and discover new ways of coping with situations.
  • As well as being valuable to the childcare worker, reflective practice can have a positive effect on the well-being of children and their families/carers if implemented successfully. It provides an opportunity to reflect and make links between theory and practice. As a result, childcare workers will develop their confidence in preparing new activities for children. They will develop a better awareness and understanding of children's needs which, in turn, will enable them to offer first-hand experiences which will extend their learning.
  • By taking advantage of relevant learning opportunities, childcare workers will develop into confident workers who always consider the well-being of children and their families/carers. By attending various courses and undertaking research, skills and knowledge can be developed that will motivate childcare workers to develop good practice offering a quality service to children. By developing their flexibility and mastering the ability to solve problems, childcare workers will develop a positive attitude towards learning. As a result, they will be able to support children in their play, development and learning.
