Personal protective equipment (PPE) provides a physical barrier between microorganisms and the wearer.
It offers protection by helping to prevent microorganisms from contaminating hands, eyes, clothing, hair, shoes and so on and includes:
- gloves
- protective eyewear (goggles, safety glasses etc.)
- mask
- apron
- gown
- boots or shoe covers
- cap or hair cover.
The following principles should guide health and social care workers in the use of PPE:
- It should be chosen according to the risk of exposure. The health and social care worker should assess whether they are at risk of exposure to blood, body fluids and so on and choose the appropriate equipment for the task to be undertaken.
- Avoid any contact between contaminated PPE and surfaces, clothing or people outside the patient care areas, PPE should not be worn outside the care area.
- If the equipment is re-usable, it must be properly decontaminated before being used again.
- Washable items must be correctly laundered at the correct temperature to ensure maximum cleanliness.
- All disposable items, caps, plastic aprons and shoe covers should be safely discarded.
- Re-usable boots must be thoroughly disinfected.
- Splashes of blood, bodily fluids onto skin must be washed off immediately with water.

- Dylid ei ddewis yn ôl y risg o amlygiad. Dylai'r gweithiwr iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol asesu p’un a yw mewn perygl o ddod i gysylltiad â gwaed, hylifau'r corff ac yn y blaen a dewis yr offer priodol ar gyfer ymgymryd â'r dasg.
- Osgoi unrhyw gyswllt rhwng PPE ac arwynebau halogedig, dillad neu bobl y tu allan i ardaloedd gofal y cleifion, ni ddylid gwisgo PPE y tu allan i'r man gofal.
- Os oes modd ail-ddefnyddio'r cyfarpar, rhaid ei ddad-halogi'n iawn cyn ei ddefnyddio eto.
- Rhaid golchi eitemau y gellir eu golchi yn gywir ar y tymheredd cywir i sicrhau'r glendid mwyaf posibl.
- Dylid gwaredu pob eitem tafladwy, capiau, ffedogau plastig a gorchuddion esgidiau yn ddiogel.
- Rhaid diheintio esgidiau y gellir eu hailddefnyddio yn drylwyr.
- Mae'n rhaid golchi unrhyw waed, hylifau'r corff sy’n tasgu ar y croen ar unwaith gyda dŵr.
