The role of a GP

A general practitioner is also known as a GP. They diagnose and treat individuals with illnesses. They also provide advice to individuals to improve health, such as advice on diet, giving up smoking and immunisation. They can prescribe medication, or refer individuals to other professionals if needed.

General practitioners work in health care settings. They have their own surgeries where individuals can make appointments to see them. They can also see individuals at home if needed.

Becoming a GP is a long process. The qualifications needed are:

  • three good A Levels at grades AAA or AAB in chemistry and either biology, physics or maths, plus another academic subject
  • a degree in medicine, recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • a two-year foundation course of general training
  • specialist training in general practice.

They work in the private and statutory sector.

Nurses work within multi-disciplinary teams and have a range of responsibilities, which include:

  • educating patients about their health.

The role of an early-years teacher

Teachers work in a range of different settings, ranging from nursery settings, primary schools and secondary schools, in both the private and statutory sector.

An early-years teacher works with children from 0-5 years old. They implement the early years foundation stage (EYFS) and plan and deliver lessons to children in their care.

Early-years teachers have a range of responsibilities, these include:

  • developing teaching resources
  • motivating children to learn
  • delivering pastoral care
  • working with other professionals, such as teaching assistants
  • assessing and monitoring children’s performance.

Once teachers have been teaching for a while, they can take on extra responsibility, such as head of department and responsibility within pastoral care etc.

The skills needed to be a teacher include: good organisation; effective communication skills, good time management and the ability to work independently.

To become a teacher an individual must have the following qualifications:

  • 5 GCSE’s at grade A*-C, including English, science and maths
  • 3 A Levels (grades dependent on individual university requirements)
  • a degree in teacher training, or a degree in a relevant subject then progression on to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) there are also other graduate based training opportunities available to become a teacher.

The role of a social worker

Social workers work in the statutory sector. They support vulnerable individuals of all age groups that may require care. This may include the elderly, children and families, individuals with disabilities, individuals with special needs and those who may have just come out of prison.

As part of their role, they carry out interviews to assess an individual or a family’s circumstances. This is in order to produce a plan of care to meet their needs. Once the care plan is in place, they will monitor and review the plan of care to ensure the plan continuously meets the individuals or the family’s needs.

They may also liaise with other agencies to make referrals as and when needed.

Once qualified, social workers can further their careers by taking other courses, such as counselling. They must also continue to update their knowledge with CPD (continuing professional development). With experience, they can become senior social workers and progress into management positions.

Social work is a very demanding job, so it is crucial that an individual has the relevant skills. Skills that a social worker may need can include:

  • to be able to work under pressure

  • problem-solving skills
  • the ability to motivate others
  • relationship-building skills
  • the ability to deal with challenging behaviour.
