Registered childminders
Childminders are self-employed professionals, caring for other individuals’ children in their own homes. They care for a small number of children, who can vary in age from new-borns to school age children. Childminders are able to offer real-life learning experiences such as visits to the park. Many parents choose childminders because they want a flexible childcare service, or they prefer to think that their children are being cared for in a more informal setting. Childminders are regulated and inspected by CIW (Care Inspectorate Wales).
Nannies
Parents, who want their children cared for in their own home, employ nannies. Often the nannies live with the family and take care of many aspects of the child’s life such as cooking their food, washing their clothes and doing the school run with school-aged children.
Day nurseries
Day nurseries look after, and educate, children from 3 months to five years and mainly operate around normal work hours between 8am and 6pm. They operate all year round and can offer free, and paid for, childcare for children between the ages of 3 months to 5 years. Depending on the size of the nursery and the number of staff, they can care for a large number of children. Day nurseries are regulated and inspected by CIW.
Pre-schools
Pre-schools offer play and education sessions for children between the ages of 2 and 5. They generally only run during term time and offer either morning or afternoon sessions between Monday and Friday. If the pre-school is registered with a local authority, parents can use their child’s entitlement of 15 free hours of nursery education. Day nurseries are regulated and inspected by CIW.
Nursery classes
Nursery classes are offered by many schools and accept children an academic year before they are due to start in the reception class. The classes run only during term time and during school hours and offer either morning or afternoon sessions. Nurseries are inspected by Estyn.
Wrap around childcare
Many parents need childcare before the start of, or at the end of the school day as well as during school holidays. Breakfast and after school clubs are offered by most schools and in some cases, at settings in the local community during term time. Holiday schemes offer childcare outside term time.
Breakfast and after school clubs have to be registered as part of the school it operates in or with CIW if they operate sessions over two hours a day.
Disabled children
Many childcare providers offer care for children who have a special education need or disability (SEND) and should work with the child’s parents to ensure that the child’s specific needs are understood and supported. There are also childcare settings that specifically cater for disabled children. These settings will be regulated and inspected by CIW.

Mae llawer o rieni yn dewis gofalwyr plant gan eu bod yn dymuno cael gwasanaeth gofal plant hyblyg, neu mae'n well ganddyn nhw feddwl bod eu plant yn derbyn gofal mewn lleoliad mwy anffurfiol. Mae gofalwyr plant yn cael eu rheoleiddio a'u harolygu gan Arolygiaeth Gofal Cymru (AGC).
Nanis
Mae rhieni sy'n dymuno i'w plant dderbyn gofal yn eu cartrefi eu hunain yn cyflogi nanis. Yn aml bydd y nanis yn byw gyda'r teulu ac yn gofalu am sawl agwedd ar fywyd y plentyn fel coginio ei fwyd, golchi ei ddillad ac yn mynd â phlant oedran ysgol yn ôl ac ymlaen i'r ysgol.
Meithrinfeydd dydd
Mae meithrinfeydd dydd yn gofalu am blant rhwng 3 mis a phum mlwydd oed, ac yn eu haddysgu, ac maen nhw'n gweithredu'n bennaf yn ystod oriau gwaith arferol rhwng 8am a 6pm. Maen nhw ar agor drwy'r flwyddyn ac yn gallu cynnig gofal am ddim, sydd wedi'i dalu amdano, i blant rhwng 3 mis a 5 mlwydd oed. Yn dibynnu ar faint y feithrinfa a nifer y staff, maen nhw'n gallu gofalu am nifer mawr o blant. Mae meithrinfeydd dydd yn cael eu rheoleiddio a'u harolygu gan AGC.
Darpariaeth cyn-ysgol
Mae darpariaeth cyn-ysgol yn cynnig sesiynau chwarae ac addysg i blant rhwng 2 a 5 oed. Maen nhw fel arfer yn cael eu cynnal yn ystod y tymor yn unig ac yn cynnig un ai sesiynau bore neu brynhawn rhwng dydd Llun a dydd Gwener. Os yw'r lleoliad cyn-ysgol wedi'i gofrestru ag awdurdod lleol, gall rhieni ddefnyddio hawliad eu plentyn o 15 awr am ddim o addysg feithrin. Mae meithrinfeydd dydd yn cael eu rheoleiddio a'u harolygu gan AGC.
Dosbarthiadau meithrin
Mae llawer o ysgolion yn cynnig dosbarthiadau meithrin ac maen nhw'n derbyn plant un flwyddyn academaidd cyn mae disgwyl iddyn nhw ddechrau yn y dosbarth derbyn. Mae'r dosbarthiadau yn cael eu cynnal yn ystod y tymor yn unig ac yn ystod oriau ysgol ac maen nhw'n cynnig sesiynau bore neu brynhawn. Mae Estyn yn arolygu meithrinfyedd.
Gofal plant cofleidiol
Mae angen gofal plant ar lawer o rieni cyn dechrau'r diwrnod ysgol, neu ar ei ddiwedd, yn ogystal ag yn ystod gwyliau'r ysgol.
