Here is a range of tips for writing an effective conclusion. They will appear one at a time – decide whether you think each one belongs in the Do or Don’t column. You can drag and drop each one into the appropriate place.

have a clear sense of the three stages of your work – introduction, development and conclusion make sure that your remarks at the end of the essay arise logically from the arguments presented in the main body of your work maintain a balanced approach e.g. “While it may be true that……it is also possible that….” draw together threads of your argument with some “signpost” words and phrases e.g. “the evidence suggests”; “On balance…” be concise and economical with your writing reference the task as you conclude repeat material and arguments which have already been made begin a new argument or introduce new material finish abruptly
