Luther Mise-en-scène

The mise-en-scène of the episode is extremely key to many of the messages communicated in this programme.

In groups you are going to use the handout to make notes about the mise-en-scène of the first episode and carry out some semiotic analysis:

  • What are the connotations?
  • What are the narrative elements?
  • How is each character represented?
  • Explore how Luther’s creator uses verisimilitude*.
  • Compare it to examples in other works on television.
  • How true are the characters that appear in the episode, are they stereotypical or do they possess different qualities to make them true to life?
