Audience gap fill

Fill in the gaps

When a channel such as the BBC broadcast television programmes they should be aware of their Target Audience so that they can schedule it at the right time. With the BBC being a Public Service Broadcaster they have a responsibility to provide products for both Mainstream and Niche audiences. By choosing to broadcast on their main channel BBC One it is clear that Luther has a Primary Audience of Adults aged 25-40. Since its critical success and later streaming on Netflix it has picked up a large Secondary Audience of 16-25 year olds. Much of its audience would have developed through the growing number of Fans for its lead actor Idris Elba. The Sweeney is an example of a product that had a very large Mainstream following in 1975. The content was appealing to the Primary Audience of adults 25+ who would watch ITV for its drama content. Over time The Sweeney may have picked up a Secondary Audience of viewers that were not alive in 1975 and may seek out the programme to watch. They could be Fans of the Star John Thaw or recognise its status as an influential and critically acclaimed Crime Drama from its time.
