What you can see here is that The IT Crowd, despite being made at the same time as many contemporary sitcoms borrowed the key generic conventions from some of the more classic programmes.

Creator Graham Linehan grew up watching and consuming classic comedy so has maintained some of these tropes when developing his programme.
