Design

Introduction:

At AS and A level there is the option to select design skills for practical work. There are four skills you can choose:

  • Set Design (including props)
  • Lighting Design
  • Sound Design
  • Costume Design (including Make-up and hair)

It is important to remember that designers do not work in isolation. You will need to work closely alongside the actors in your group and other designers. It is possible for your group to be made up of actors, set, lighting, sound and costume designers, so you will need to be familiar with all areas of production design.

In a group where you are the only designer, all of you should take responsibility for the other areas. So, for example, if you are the costume designer in a group with three actors, you will all share responsibility for lighting, sound and set.

The four sections below will navigate you through the four design areas. It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the disciplines that you are not specialising in in order to develop a more detailed understanding of the theatre design process.

ACTORS: It would be beneficial for you to also spend some time on this resource to develop an appreciation of what designers in your group need to do. This way you can work more effectively together to produce exciting results.
