What are the two horns of the dilemma? Can you summarise them by selecting extracts of text deciding whether they belong to dilemma 1 or 2 and then use these extracts to produce your own succinct notes?

Finally, is there a third way out of the dilemma for someone who believes in God? Add your ideas to your notes before printing.

  1. What are the two horns of the dilemma? Hint – a dilemma is an idea which has two elements neither of which seems very satisfactory. So, if morality comes from God, what is the difficulty with that? What’s the problem with saying “this is right because God says so?” (and only because God says so). And if morality is independent of God, where else might morality come from? If morality is independent of God, does this make God redundant when it comes to discussing what is good or evil?
  2. Is there a third way out of the dilemma for someone who believes in God? Hint - suppose, for example that we argue that morality isn't ultimately about commands at all, but is about something else, such as character traits. In other words, commands should be judged against character traits such as love, mercy and compassion. Does it help to change the focus away from commands and on to the nature of God? After all, could it not be argued that Jesus himself broke some of the commands of the Old Testament in the name of love (for example, in John chapter 8 he refuses to stone the woman caught in the act of adultery even though the command in Leviticus says “stone the adulterer” ).
