The meaning of the Muslim term 'Jihad is 'struggle'.
Within the religion of Islam there are two distinct types of jihad. Although Islam is a religion of peace, there is the concept of 'holy war' or the 'lesser jihad'. This 'war' may only be fought in defence of Islam and there are strict conditions laid down about how such a war may be fought.
The more important jihad, the 'greater jihad', is the internal struggle each Muslim faces every day to live as a good Muslim.
There are references to both types of jihad in the Qur'an and the Hadith.
