Browning, a female member of the Romantic poets, was born into a deeply religious family in 1806. She was home educated and retained her religious vigour throughout her life. She started her writing career at a very young age and continued to study hard in her teenage years, despite suffering ill health. In 1844, following her publication of poems entitled ‘Poems’, she began writing to the poet Robert Browning; they continued to exchange over 550 letters and secretly married in Italy in 1846. Her father, who didn’t want any of his children to marry, refused to ever speak to her again. She continued to live in Italy with her husband until her death in 1861. One of her most highly regarded pieces of work,‘The Sonnets’ was written for her husband and published in 1850.
